The "Fire Soldiers" series was born during a period of my life when it seemed I was running all the time. To get to work, to get the kids, to get lunch, to get to baseball games, to get to art class, to get the house chores caught up, to dinner spend time with my husband and friends. I was also running a lot in the early dawn hours (before getting the kids off to school and getting myself to the office) to clear my head and burn off some calories and organize my day. I stopped every mile or so at the fire hydrants to stretch or tie my shoes, and I began to notice each one was sort of his own little person, stalwart and strong, just waiting for someone to need him. He was ready. Our little neighborhood guardians. We pass by them everyday, and these little soldiers just stand there, silently doing their job, waiting.
"Tall boy" was the first in the series and has been with me in my studio. He surprised me by gaining entry to some fairly hard-to-get-into local exhibitions and shows, and won some awards. For a new artist starting out in a late life career change, those confidence boosters were a life saver. Thank you, little soldiers.
